Historic Astronomical Event: Sun Aligns Directly Over Kaaba on Eid al-Adha 2026
————————————
On Wednesday, May 27, a rare astronomical phenomenon will coincide with Eid al-Adha, as the sun is set to align directly above the Kaaba in Mecca at 12:18 PM local time, coinciding with the call to Dhuhr prayer. This alignment, which occurs only twice a year—on May 27 and July 15—results from the sun’s apparent motion between the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn due to Earth’s axial tilt of approximately 23.5 degrees.
During this moment, the Kaaba will cast no shadow, allowing observers worldwide to precisely determine the Qibla from locations where the sun is visible. The synchronization of the solar alignment with the lunar-based Islamic calendar makes this event exceptionally rare; the current convergence of Eid al-Adha with the solar alignment is expected to occur only once every 65 to 100 years.
The phenomenon highlights the intricate interplay between the solar and lunar calendars, illustrating the precision of celestial mechanics and their alignment with Islamic rituals. Astronomers note that while the sun aligns with the Kaaba biannually, the coincidence with Eid al-Adha this year is a unique convergence of the two calendars, offering a striking visual and spiritual moment for Muslims and astronomers alike.
