“In the Footsteps of Wahb”: New documentary tells story of Christian embracing Islam

A new documentary film titled “In the Footsteps of Wahb,” inspired by the true story of Mr. Hassanain Kazim Abu Helal, chronicles the journey of a character named “Sylvain,” who transitions from Christianity to Islam in the holy city of Karbala. Abu Helal, the writer and author, expressed pride in seeing his work transformed into a film showcased at the Al-Abbas Holy Shrine.

The story begins in Lausanne, Switzerland, where Sylvain, an architect from a conservative Christian family, embraces Islam after years of friendship with Abu Helal and his family. He reflects on his upbringing and acknowledges his diverse family background, stating, “I have become a Shia Muslim.”

The film addresses modern identity and belief crises among youth and aims to bridge gaps for both Muslim and non-Muslim audiences. It has garnered significant attention in Europe, resonating with viewers who appreciate its historical truths.

The title references Wahb ibn Abdullah al-Kalbi, a Christian martyr who converted to Islam and fought alongside Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, during the Battle of Karbala.
