Quran dating back to Seljuk state sold at int’l auction in London

The Sotheby’s auction in the British capital, London, witnessed the sale of a miniature ornate Qur’an belonging to the time of the Seljuk state, at an amount of 138,600 thousand pounds, equivalent to 3,709,440 Egyptian pounds.

The auction house had put the Quran at an estimated price starting from 50 thousand pounds, up to 80 thousand pounds, in the auction it held under the title “Arts of the Islamic and Indian World”, including oriental carpets, which include many paper manuscripts and Qurans. The Qur’anic ones are different in terms of shape and design, in addition to the Islamic handmade carpets.

The Qur’an contains 284 leaves, and each page contains 15 lines written in Naskh script in black ink, and verses separated by golden rose-shaped signs, while the titles of the Qur’anic chapters are written in gold, outlined in black with illuminated framing of the pages.The auction house clarified that this copy of the Qur’an belongs to the twelfth century, between the late eleventh and early thirteenth centuries, and is considered the oldest Qur’an in this style.
