The Canadian Medical Association apologized to readers and Muslims in the country for an article in its magazine that had offended the headscarf, causing angry reactions.
In its latest issue, the magazine published an article by Dr. Sherif Emile, in which he claimed that the hijab is a “tool for persecution and exploitation of children.”
Following the angry reaction, Dr. Kristen Barturk, editor-in-chief of the aforementioned magazine, issued a statement, explaining that after publishing the article, they had received negative responses from many institutions and individuals, announcing that the article was withdrawn and an apology.
She added, “The article does not include a suitable topic for publication,” noting that “many readers across Canada are disgusted by its publication.”
Patrick pointed out that the representation of the Canadian Muslim community in the advisory bodies of the Journal of the Medical Association of her country is “incomplete, and this is something we will try to address.”
“I sincerely apologize for the great harm done to so many people, including medical colleagues and students, and I take full responsibility for the poor editing process that led to this error,” she said.
