Egypt has decided to close Imam Hussein Mosque in Cairo to bar Shia Muslims
The Endowments Ministry in Egypt has decided to close Imam Hussein Mosque in Cairo to bar Shia Muslims from practicing their rituals.
The decision came after Salafi coalitions in the Egyptian Parliament requested to close the mosque to confront any Shia activities.
Middle East Newspaper said Salafi coalitions have been established to corner the mosque and prevent Shias from observing any religious occasion, however, Shia sources confirmed that such moves will not hinder them from practicing their rituals and they will continue visiting the mosque throughout the year.
Egypt’s Shia minority has long been subject to ongoing oppression both from religious and state figures, who have encouraged distrust of the community. Sectarian incitement reached a crescendo in June 2013, when a group of Salafi sheikhs led the brutal mob lynching of four Shia men in a village outside Cairo.
