2025 Witnessed a Rapid Escalation of Islamophobia from Social Prejudice to Open Hostility
——————————————-
The year 2025 was marked by an increasingly rapid shift from underlying anti-Muslim prejudice to openly expressed discrimination, hostility and violence, according to an analysis of Islamophobia and its manifestations worldwide.
The analysis distinguishes between two forms of Islamophobia: latent Islamophobia, rooted in long-standing stereotypes and negative portrayals of Islam and Muslims in films, news coverage, political discourse and publications; and manifest Islamophobia, expressed through discriminatory laws, surveillance, violations of civil rights, political rhetoric and acts of violence.
It argues that the gap between these two forms has narrowed considerably, with longstanding anti-Muslim stereotypes increasingly translating into immediate public hostility and collective punishment.
The analysis argues that these incidents demonstrate how deeply rooted anti-Muslim stereotypes can fuel discrimination and hostility, even against Muslim communities and individuals who have no connection to acts of violence.
