Yemeni researcher Mohammed Atboush has won the Andrew Rippin Award for Best Paper in Qur’anic Studies for the 2026–2027 academic year, presented by the International Qur’anic Studies Association (IQSA), in recognition of his research exploring connections between ancient Yemeni inscriptions and the meanings of Qur’anic vocabulary.

Atboush received the award for his paper, titled “Notes on the Sacred Marriage Ritual in Ancient Yemen,” which he recently presented at an academic symposium organised by IQSA and hosted by the University of Vienna in Austria.

The researcher explained that his study re-examines a Qur’anic term through an analysis of ancient Yemeni inscriptions and Prophetic traditions, seeking to explore its linguistic and historical dimensions within the cultural and religious context of pre-Islamic Arabia.

The research highlights the importance of ancient inscriptions and archaeological linguistic evidence in advancing Qur’anic studies, particularly through comparisons between historical texts and Islamic sources to gain a deeper understanding of Qur’anic expressions.

The Andrew Rippin Award is presented by IQSA to recognise outstanding academic contributions and encourage specialised research in Qur’anic studies.
