Gaza Faces Looming Humanitarian Catastrophe as Winter Approaches, Threatening Hundreds of Thousands of Displaced People

The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is expected to deteriorate further with the approaching winter season, as hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians face growing risks from heavy rainfall, flooding and falling temperatures amid widespread infrastructure destruction and severe shortages of fuel and humanitarian supplies.
The Gaza Strip’s Winter Emergency Committee warned in a statement issued today that approximately 200,000 deteriorating tents housing displaced families no longer provide adequate protection against harsh weather conditions. The committee also reported that around 7,800 tents are situated in particularly hazardous locations, exposing their occupants to the dangers of flooding and rainwater accumulation. In addition, approximately 2,000 damaged and structurally unsafe buildings are at risk of collapse with the onset of rainfall, posing further threats to civilians.
The committee stressed that children, women and people with disabilities are among the most vulnerable groups facing these conditions, as families continue to endure severe humanitarian and living difficulties. It added that the extensive damage to infrastructure, combined with shortages of fuel, equipment and emergency supplies, is significantly undermining efforts to prepare for winter and respond to weather-related emergencies.
