The Global Nonviolence Organisation (FreeMuslim) has called on governments and international institutions to end impunity for crimes against journalists and ensure the prosecution of those responsible for violations against media workers.

In a statement marking the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists on November 2, the organisation expressed concern over the continued killing, arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, torture and intimidation of journalists, particularly in conflict zones.

It stressed that the failure to hold perpetrators accountable encourages further violations, restricts press freedom and prevents the public from accessing the truth.

The organisation urged governments and judicial authorities to launch independent investigations, prosecute those responsible, release journalists detained for their reporting or opinions, and strengthen legal and practical protections for media workers.

It also called for the repeal of laws restricting freedom of expression and the establishment of a safe environment in which media institutions can operate independently.

The statement concluded by commending journalists who continue their work despite serious risks, stressing that protecting media workers and ending impunity are essential to justice, peace and security.
