Indonesia: Floods inundate 12 villages in Aceh as authorities warn of rising river levels

Flooding has affected 12 villages across three subdistricts in West Aceh, Indonesia, following heavy rainfall that caused rivers to overflow and water to spread into nearby residential areas, prompting local disaster management teams to step up emergency monitoring efforts.
Darmawan, acting head of the West Aceh Disaster Management Agency, said on Sunday in the city of Meulaboh that intense rainfall in inland areas had caused river levels to rise, resulting in flooding in neighbouring villages and residential communities.
He explained that 12 villages across three subdistricts had been affected, with water levels reaching several dozen centimetres in some locations. Floodwaters had entered homes and inundated parts of residential neighbourhoods.
The disaster management agency has deployed a joint response team to monitor developments on the ground, assess the affected areas and evaluate the extent of the flooding amid continued concerns over rising water levels.
Local authorities have urged residents living near riverbanks and in low-lying areas to remain vigilant, closely monitor changes in river levels and take precautions against the possibility of further flooding.
