Protests Sweep Around 50 Italian Cities amid Growing Pressure on Meloni Government
—————————————–
Demonstrations against Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government took place in around 50 Italian cities on Friday, as students, university groups and trade unions protested over rising living costs, declining wages and government policies.
The protests coincided with calls by independent trade unions for strikes in key sectors, including public transport and healthcare, raising the prospect of disruptions to essential services. Students also demanded increased public funding for education and improved conditions at schools and universities.
Protesters blamed the governing coalition for the pressure on household purchasing power and called for stronger economic and social measures. Authorities reinforced security in several cities amid concerns about possible clashes, following unrest during demonstrations in Milan on October 18.
The protests reflect mounting labour and social pressure on Meloni’s government, with demands for higher wages and greater investment in education and public services.
