Arizona Town Council Rejects Proposal to Ban Islamic Sharia Law

The town council of Fountain Hills, Arizona, has declined to advance a proposal seeking to ban Islamic Sharia law, a decision welcomed by the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Arizona chapter (CAIR-AZ) as a step toward protecting religious freedom, equality, and Muslims’ constitutional rights.

The proposal was introduced by local council member Allen Skillicorn, who said it was intended to prevent the implementation of Sharia law in the town. However, the council declined to provide the necessary direction for the measure to proceed, effectively halting the initiative.

CAIR-AZ described the proposal as targeting the Muslim community and contributing to what it characterized as a broader campaign of anti-Muslim political rhetoric.

The decision followed a community advocacy campaign that included hundreds of messages sent to council members and participation by residents and activists in a public meeting opposing the measure.

The organization said references to Sharia law are sometimes used in US political discourse to fuel fear of Muslims, reaffirming its commitment to combating Islamophobia and defending religious freedom and minority rights.
