At least 50 people were killed and 179 injured when two high-speed trains collided near the town of Urda in Spain’s Toledo province on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. Emergency teams, medical helicopters, and military rescue units were deployed as authorities suspended rail services linking Madrid with southern Spain.

The trains, operated by Renfe and Iryo, were carrying a combined 544 passengers. The collision derailed several carriages, with at least two reportedly falling down an embankment, complicating rescue operations.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed shock and said he was monitoring the response with transport officials and regional authorities. Rail operator Adif launched a review to establish the circumstances of the crash, but the cause had not yet been determined.

High-speed services between Madrid, Ciudad Real, and Andalusia were suspended, with no immediate timetable announced for their resumption. Rescue operations and treatment of the injured continued as authorities awaited a more definitive casualty count.
