Hindu Priest Calls for Protection of Historic Mosque in New Delhi

A Hindu priest in New Delhi has called for the protection of the historic Race Course Mosque and opposed the demolition of places of worship, as uncertainty grows over the site’s future amid concerns among Muslim worshippers.

Raj Shastri, who has worked at a nearby temple for around 15 years, said religious sites should be preserved and emphasized peaceful coexistence and mutual respect. He also highlighted his friendship with the mosque’s imam, Mohammed Haroon, saying the area had not experienced religious tensions between local communities.

The mosque, which can accommodate around 800 worshippers, has reportedly been without water and electricity for more than a week, despite being listed in heritage records and Delhi Waqf Board registers.

The Indian government has informed the Delhi High Court that it intends to acquire the area where the mosque is located, citing national security concerns. No official demolition order has been issued so far.
