UK Muslims Face Highest Levels of Hate Crime When Religious, Racial Motives Are Combined

A report by Middle East Eye, citing UK Home Office data and the Crime Survey for England and Wales, says Muslims experience the highest levels of hate crime when religious and racial motivations are considered together. Critics argue that police recording methods may underestimate the scale of anti-Muslim hostility.
Muslims in the United Kingdom face high levels of hate crime, but official police statistics may not fully reflect the extent of anti-Muslim attacks because incidents are classified under different categories, according to a report published by Middle East Eye.
Drawing on Home Office data, the report notes that police records show high rates of anti-Jewish hate crime when incidents are classified solely by religious motivation. However, many attacks targeting Muslims are recorded as racially motivated offences, making comparisons based only on religiously classified crimes incomplete.
The report also cites the Crime Survey for England and Wales, which includes experiences of crime that may not have been reported to police. According to the findings presented, Muslims experience the highest levels of hate crime when religious and racial motivations are considered together.
Labour MP John McDonnell warned that underestimating anti-Muslim hate crime in official statistics could lead to public policies that fail to address the risks faced by Muslim communities. He said gaps between the actual scale of attacks and police-recorded figures could leave Muslims more vulnerable to targeting.
The report identifies the overlap between racism and Islamophobia as a major challenge in monitoring anti-Muslim offences. Incidents motivated by both religious identity and ethnicity may be recorded under a single category, potentially obscuring the full pattern of discrimination.
The findings come amid continuing debate in the UK over hate crime and discrimination against religious minorities.
