Eight prisoners were killed and more than 15 others injured, some critically, after a fire broke out inside a prison in Kobani, northern Aleppo, following security tensions over the planned transfer of inmates, according to a security source.

The source said the incident occurred early Saturday after a security force arrived from Aleppo to move several prisoners to other facilities. Some inmates reportedly resisted the transfer, fearing mistreatment, and a fire later spread through a prison dormitory.

Thick smoke and flames caused multiple deaths and injuries, while some prisoners sought shelter in bathrooms before guards opened the dormitory and began evacuating and treating the injured.

No official statement has yet detailed the circumstances of the fire or announced the results of any investigation.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions in Kobani following protests over the killing of Kurdish youth Sami Hasso, known as “Siban,” in Hasakah province. Security forces imposed a curfew in the city after clashes between demonstrators and authorities, with the restrictions later extended for 72 hours.
