Syria: Dozens of Women Killed and Hundreds of Remains Found in Mass Graves Amid Ongoing War Consequences

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has reported that 118 women were killed across Syria between the beginning of 2026 and the end of August, highlighting the continued dangers facing civilians despite a decline in the intensity of armed clashes.

According to the observatory, the deaths resulted from various causes, including shootings, internal fighting, stray bullets, sectarian violence, airstrikes, explosive devices, and remnants of war. The report also noted that the remains of six women were discovered in mass graves, alongside other deaths under unclear circumstances.

Aleppo recorded the highest number of female victims with 37 deaths, followed by Rural Damascus with 17 and Homs with 11. Other provinces also reported casualties linked to ongoing insecurity and the legacy of years of conflict.

In a related report, the observatory said that 23 mass graves containing the remains of 203 people, including women and children, were discovered in different parts of Syria during the same period. Aleppo had the largest number of identified remains with 70 people, followed by Rural Damascus with 41.

The discoveries have renewed calls for addressing the fate of missing persons and unidentified victims. The observatory urged authorities and international bodies to professionally document mass grave sites, identify victims, preserve evidence, and investigate the circumstances of their deaths.

Human rights groups stressed that protecting civilians, holding those responsible for violations accountable, and addressing the humanitarian legacy of the Syrian war remain major challenges for the country’s future.
