The Holy Shrine of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) in Najaf has raised the black flag of mourning above its sacred courtyard to mark the approaching anniversary of the martyrdom of Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).

The flag-raising ceremony was held at the shrine of the Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali bin Abi Talib (peace be upon him), in the presence of visitors, mourners and shrine servants. Participants commemorated the life and legacy of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), highlighting his efforts to spread the values of faith, justice and mercy.

The ceremony marked the beginning of a special mourning programme organised by the Imam Ali Holy Shrine, which includes mourning gatherings, religious lectures, Quran recitations and cultural and devotional activities, along with services for visitors.

The shrine’s departments have also begun implementing organisational plans to welcome mourners and facilitate the movement of visitors in coordination with relevant authorities.

Muslims in Iraq and around the world commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) on the 28th of Safar through religious gatherings and mourning ceremonies. The holy city of Najaf traditionally witnesses large numbers of visitors gathering at the shrine of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) to honour the Prophet’s legacy and reflect on his teachings of faith, sacrifice and humanity.
