Saudi Arabia, US Carry Out Strikes on Iran-Linked Groups in Iraq After Drone Attacks

Saudi Arabia and the United States have carried out coordinated strikes against Iran-aligned armed groups in Iraq, following reported drone attacks targeting Saudi facilities. The strikes have raised tensions in the region, with Iraqi groups condemning the action as a violation of sovereignty.

Saudi Arabia said its air defences intercepted several drones targeting oil facilities in the Eastern Province and Riyadh, and accused Iran-linked militias operating from Iraqi territory of being behind the attacks. Riyadh stated that the response was conducted in coordination with US Central Command (CENTCOM).

The Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) in Iraq said eight of its members were martyred and four others injured in the strikes on its positions. The group described the attacks as a dangerous escalation and a breach of Iraq’s sovereignty.

Iraqi authorities said they were investigating the alleged drone attacks and reaffirmed that Iraqi territory should not be used to launch attacks against neighbouring countries. Meanwhile, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of Iran-aligned factions, denied responsibility for the drone strikes and rejected Saudi accusations.

The developments mark a further escalation of regional tensions amid ongoing confrontations involving the United States, Iran and allied armed groups across the Middle East.
