UN Warns of Catastrophic Consequences if Military Escalation Resumes in Middle East

The United Nations has warned of catastrophic consequences if large-scale hostilities resume in the Middle East, saying any renewed escalation could threaten the security of people across the region, international peace, and the global economy amid recent tensions between the United States and Iran.
Elizabeth Spehar, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support, said every military strike or new incident increases the risk of miscalculation. She added that the UN Secretary-General condemns all attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure and stresses the need to protect residential areas, ports, energy facilities, commercial vessels, and their crews.
The UN official called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint, avoid any steps that could undermine the ceasefire or obstruct diplomatic efforts, and fully comply with international law, particularly regarding the protection of civilians and freedom of navigation, including in the Strait of Hormuz.
