Historic Procession in Jammu and Kashmir Commemorates Imam Hussein on Dal Lake

The city of Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir witnessed the traditional mourning procession on the famous Dal Lake as part of Muharram ceremonies commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him.
Local media reported that the procession, which is more than 186 years old, took place on the 9th of Muharram. Participants gathered in the Rainawari area before boarding wooden boats that moved across Dal Lake, while mourners dressed in black and raised Husseini banners in a scene reflecting deep devotion to the memory of Ashura.
The procession draws large numbers of followers of Ahlulbayt, peace be upon them, each year. It passes through the lake’s waterways toward the Hassanabad area, amid an atmosphere of grief and remembrance of the tragedy of Karbala.
Participants said the ritual represents a religious and cultural heritage passed down through generations. They added that it embodies the values of sacrifice and loyalty upheld by Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, and that the message of Karbala will remain a symbol of standing with the oppressed and confronting injustice.
The Dal Lake procession is considered one of the most prominent Ashura ceremonies in Jammu and Kashmir due to its unique character, combining Husseini rituals with the lake’s distinctive geography and attracting many mourners each year.
