Pakistan Marks Ashura Amid Unprecedented Security Measures, Wide Participation in Husseini Processions

Pakistan commemorated Ashura with mourning processions and Husseini gatherings across various cities under strict security measures.
In the capital, Islamabad, the main procession began after Dhuhr prayers from the Markazi Imambargah in the G-6 area. Central processions were also held in Karachi, Hyderabad, Lahore, and Peshawar, with large numbers of mourners taking part amid intensive security and organizational measures.
In Karachi, the main procession moved from Nishtar Park toward the Hussainian Iranian Imambargah, while traffic police designated alternative routes due to the closure of several main roads. Police announced the deployment of more than 20,000 security personnel, including over 1,300 traffic police officers, to secure the 9th of Muharram ceremonies. Reserve forces and snipers were also stationed along the procession route.
In Islamabad, authorities deployed around 16,000 personnel from the police, Rangers, and army to secure Husseini processions and gatherings.
Authorities also launched a special electronic application called “Safe Muharram,” allowing citizens to report suspicious activity or security gaps. A central operations room was also established to monitor the security situation in real time.
In Punjab province, authorities deployed more than 70,000 security personnel for the 9th of Muharram events, while the total number of forces assigned to protect Muharram ceremonies exceeded 152,000, supported by the army and Rangers. Thousands of surveillance cameras, drones, and field monitoring cameras were activated to oversee processions and Husseini gatherings.
Officials said more than 47,000 Husseini gatherings and processions are being held across the province during Muharram, including thousands classified as sensitive from a security perspective.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, authorities deployed around 12,000 security personnel in Peshawar alone, while more than 43,000 police officers were assigned to protection duties across the province. Exceptional measures were also introduced, including the enforcement of Section 144 in several areas, the deployment of bomb disposal units and police dogs, and the securing of places of worship and sensitive locations.
