Shia Communities Around World Commemorate Ashura with Mourning Processions, Husseini Gatherings

Shia communities across various countries commemorated the day of Ashura of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, through Husseini gatherings, mourning processions, and religious and cultural events, recalling the eternal tragedy of Karbala and renewing their commitment to the values embodied by the uprising of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him.

Cities across Europe, North America, Australia, East Asia, and Africa have witnessed broad participation from Muslim communities and followers of Ahlulbayt, peace be upon them. Mourners gathered in Islamic centers and Husseiniyas to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, his family, and his companions, in an atmosphere of faith, grief, and loyalty.

In several countries, including Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, dozens of Husseini gatherings were held in multiple languages. These programs aimed to address diaspora communities and younger generations, while introducing the message of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, and his principles of justice, human dignity, and resistance to oppression.

Countries in East Asia and Africa also witnessed various Ashura programs organized by Islamic centers and religious institutions. These included religious lectures, intellectual seminars, social and service activities, humanitarian initiatives, and donation campaigns inspired by the values of generosity and sacrifice established by the school of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him.

Organizers said that commemorating Ashura in diaspora communities carries both a religious and humanitarian message. They said it helps strengthen Islamic and cultural identity, promote coexistence and dialogue with wider societies, and introduce the universal values of Imam Hussein’s uprising, foremost among them supporting the oppressed and defending truth and justice.
