Office of Grand Ayatollah Shirazi Announces Wednesday as First Day of Muharram 1448 AH

The office of the Supreme Religious Authority, Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sadiq al-Husseini al-Shirazi, announced that the crescent moon of Muharram had not been proven according to the religious criteria accepted by His Eminence, may his shadow endure.

In a brief statement received by Shia News Agency, the office said that Tuesday, June 16, 2026, will complete the month of Dhu al-Hijjah.

Accordingly, Wednesday, June 17, 2026, will be the first day of Muharram 1448 AH, marking the beginning of the month of mourning and the commemoration of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, his family and his companions, peace be upon them, in the eternal tragedy of Karbala.

Believers in different countries await the arrival of Muharram to hold Husseini mourning gatherings and rituals, remembering the principles and values embodied by the uprising of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, against oppression and deviation.
