Millions of Pilgrims Gather in Karbala, Kufa for Arafah and Martyrdom Commemorations

Millions of Shia pilgrims are converging on the holy city of Karbala to mark the night and day of Arafah at the shrines of Imam Hussein and Abu al-Fadl al-Abbas, peace be upon them. At the same time, large mourning processions are moving toward the Grand Kufa Mosque to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of Muslim ibn Aqil, peace be upon him.

The holy city of Karbala has witnessed the arrival of massive crowds of Iraqi, Arab, and foreign pilgrims since the early hours of Monday, the eighth of Dhu al-Hijjah, to commemorate the night and day of Arafah at the shrines of Imam Hussein and his brother Abu al-Fadl al-Abbas, peace be upon them.

Pilgrims continued entering the city from dawn to perform acts of worship associated with the occasion, including visiting the two holy shrines, reciting supplications, and carrying out recommended devotional acts for the blessed night and day of Arafah.

The Arafah pilgrimage is considered one of the major million-strong religious gatherings in Karbala, carrying deep spiritual meanings of repentance, sacrifice, and submission to Almighty Allah, while also reflecting the special connection between this day and Imam Hussein, peace be upon him.

Iraqi authorities have prepared service and security plans for the large gathering. Border officials also reported the entry of large numbers of Iranian pilgrims in recent days to take part in the Arafah and Eid al-Adha ceremonies in Karbala.

Meanwhile, the roads leading to the Grand Kufa Mosque have seen a wide turnout of pilgrims and Husseini mourning processions marking the martyrdom anniversary of Muslim ibn Aqil, peace be upon him, the envoy and cousin of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, along with the noble companion Hani ibn Urwah, peace be upon him.

Black banners, elegies, and mourning gatherings filled the sacred city of Kufa, as pilgrims from different Iraqi provinces joined the central ceremonies organized at the mosque.

Meanwhile, at the Mehran border, large numbers of pilgrims heading toward the holy shrines in Iraq caused heavy congestion ahead of Arafah Day. Although the crossing remains open, pilgrims called on the authorities to increase service gates and accelerate legal procedures to ease movement and honor the visitors of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him.
