A new report by the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) reveals that nearly 46 percent of British Muslims are under the age of 25, highlighting the community’s youthful demographic and growing influence across the UK.

The two-volume, 400-page study, titled “British Muslims in Numbers”, draws on the 2021 England, Wales, and Northern Ireland censuses, as well as Scotland’s 2022 census, covering demographic, social, and economic trends over the past two decades. The report estimates the Muslim population at around four million, approximately 6 percent of the UK population, with England hosting the majority.

While educational attainment among Muslims aged 16–24 has risen from 11 percent in 2001 to 21 percent in 2021, the report notes persistent economic inequalities, with 40 percent of Muslims in England living in the most deprived districts. Home ownership and professional employment remain below the national average, though female workforce participation increased from 20 percent to 31 percent over the same period.

The study also projects increasing political influence, with Muslim youth potentially reshaping election outcomes if voting age reforms are enacted. Health outcomes are generally favorable due to the young demographic, though older Muslims face challenges compared to the wider population.

The MCB emphasized that the findings highlight both contributions and ongoing challenges for British Muslims, offering crucial data for public policy on education, employment, and civic engagement.
