Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming a core tool in healthcare systems across European Union member states, with new data showing widespread adoption in medical diagnosis and clinical decision-making.

A joint report by the World Health Organization and EU bodies found that around 74% of EU countries are now using AI in areas such as medical imaging, disease detection, and clinical support systems. The findings highlight the growing integration of advanced technologies into European healthcare.

The report also noted that 63% of European countries have introduced chatbot-based services to assist patients with initial guidance and inquiries, aiming to improve access to care and reduce pressure on healthcare facilities.

While these tools offer benefits such as faster diagnosis, lower costs, and improved access—especially in underserved areas—concerns remain about data security and diagnostic accuracy.

The WHO emphasized that safe and effective use of AI requires specialized training for healthcare professionals and robust regulatory frameworks. It warned that insufficient expertise could lead to diagnostic errors and negatively impact patient care.

The report also stressed the importance of public engagement and trust, noting that a lack of transparency could lead to resistance to AI-based services.

Experts say that while AI has the potential to transform healthcare delivery, it must be implemented under strict human oversight and ethical standards.

The developments come as the European Union works toward establishing its first comprehensive legal framework to regulate artificial intelligence across sectors, including healthcare.
