Anti-Muslim Incidents Surge in U.S. Amid Security Threats to Mosques

Anti-Muslim incidents in the United States have sharply increased in recent months, with advocacy groups warning of a deteriorating climate for Muslim communities alongside growing security concerns at religious institutions.

The Muslim Public Affairs Committee (MPAC) reported an eleven-fold rise in attacks targeting Muslim individuals and institutions during the first quarter of 2026, linking the spike to heightened geopolitical tensions surrounding the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran. The group documented incidents ranging from mosque vandalism and bomb threats to assaults against Muslim women, noting a surge in hostile rhetoric online and in political discourse.

Separate monitoring by the Center for the Study of Organized Hate found a sharp increase in anti-Muslim content on social media platforms following the outbreak of the Iran conflict, including posts advocating violence and discriminatory policies.

In California, threats directed at the Islamic Society of Orange County prompted local authorities to increase police patrols around the mosque and community center, which serves thousands of residents. Officials said online posts included inflammatory claims about the mosque’s expansion and, in some cases, explicit threats of violence.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) condemned the rhetoric as part of a broader pattern of misinformation and Islamophobia, warning that such narratives can incite real-world harm. Lawmakers in California also denounced the threats and called for investigations and accountability.

Advocacy groups argue that the normalization of anti-Muslim rhetoric—both online and in political spaces—risks undermining civil liberties and social cohesion. They have urged government authorities and technology companies to take stronger action to address hate speech, protect vulnerable communities, and ensure accountability for threats and violence.
