Middle East Tensions Escalate as Israeli Strikes Hit Lebanon, Iran Exchange Intensifies, UN Warns of Wider Conflict

A sharp escalation in Middle East hostilities has unfolded over recent days, with Israeli airstrikes targeting multiple areas in Lebanon, expanding exchanges between Israel and Iran, and urgent warnings from the United Nations about the risk of a broader regional conflict.
Early Monday, the Israeli military launched a series of airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs — widely known as a stronghold of Hezbollah — as well as towns in southern Lebanon including al-Shaabiya, al-Hallousiyeh, Bdeyas and Kherbet Selm, and locations in the eastern Bekaa Valley. Lebanese media reported several injuries in the southern suburbs, though no final casualty toll had been officially confirmed as of March 2.
The Israeli military stated it was striking Hezbollah targets in response to projectile fire launched from Lebanese territory into northern Israel, where warning sirens were activated. Israeli officials said the air force was conducting operations against Hezbollah infrastructure, while some Israeli media outlets reported that targeted assassinations were being attempted.
The cross-border escalation comes amid heightened regional tensions following direct exchanges between Israel and Iran. In recent days, Israeli strikes reportedly targeted sites inside Iran, followed by Iranian retaliatory actions that extended beyond Israeli territory to include reported strikes near U.S. military facilities in the region. The developments mark one of the most expansive confrontations between the two countries in recent years.
On Saturday, the United Nations Security Council convened an emergency session to address the situation. UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep regret over what he described as a lost diplomatic opportunity and warned that continued military action poses a serious threat to international peace and security. He urged all parties to return immediately to negotiations, particularly regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk also called for restraint, warning that further escalation would only increase civilian suffering and regional instability.
