IOM Warns Funding Shortfalls Threaten Lives of Nearly Two Million Displaced in South Sudan

The United Nations’ International Organization for Migration (IOM) has warned that severe funding shortfalls are endangering the lives of nearly two million people displaced within South Sudan amid one of the world’s most protracted humanitarian crises.

According to a United Nations press release, IOM faces significant budget gaps for its operations this year, including a shortfall of about US $29 million needed to sustain critical assistance to displaced families and host communities. Without adequate funding, progress toward durable solutions for displaced people — many forced from their homes by conflict, flooding and instability — could be undermined.

South Sudan continues to grapple with chronic displacement pressures. Prolonged conflict and the spill-over effects of the war in neighbouring Sudan have pushed millions from their homes. Humanitarian agencies estimate that significant numbers of people in Jonglei and other states may be forced to flee again if insecurity persists and aid access remains limited.

The broader humanitarian situation in the region is severe, with widespread food insecurity and strained health systems. The World Food Programme reports that millions face crisis or worse levels of hunger, and funding gaps across the humanitarian response threaten efforts to reach vulnerable populations.

IOM officials have underscored the need for sustained international support to ensure life-saving assistance reaches those most in need and to support host communities bearing the strain of displacement.
