Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sadiq Hosseini Shirazi said that there is no historical record indicating that Islamic rulings were enforced through coercion during the governance of the Holy Prophet or Imam Ali (peace be upon them and their pure family).
The remarks were made during his daily scholarly session held on Wednesday, the 9th of Sha’ban 1447 AH, in which His Eminence, as in previous sessions, responded to questions from attendees on various jurisprudential issues.
Addressing the method of implementing Islamic rulings, Grand Ayatollah Shirazi stated that, according to the Quran, religious laws should be applied through wisdom, good counsel and preaching. He emphasized that the approach to implementing these rulings depends on an understanding of the prerequisites of wisdom and the principles of sincere and constructive admonition.
He added that determining how Islamic rulings are to be applied relies on the judgment and interpretation of a fully qualified jurist, who assesses circumstances based on religious knowledge and ethical considerations.
Grand Ayatollah Shirazi further stressed that historical accounts from the era of the Holy Prophet and Imam Ali (peace be upon them and their pure family) do not cite even a single instance in which people were compelled to observe religious rulings by force, underscoring the role of guidance and moral persuasion rather than coercion in religious practice.
