Grand Ayatollah Shirazi Addresses Preachers Ahead of Muharram

Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sadiq al-Husseini al-Shirazi, may Allah prolong his life, delivered his annual address to male and female preachers ahead of the month of Muharram, from his residence in the holy city of Qom.

The gathering was held in preparation for the season of mourning marking the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, with His Eminence stressing the importance of using the Husseini season to spread the teachings of the Ahlulbayt, peace be upon them, and strengthen religious and cultural awareness.

In his speech, the Supreme Marja addressed doctrinal, historical and intellectual themes linked to the uprising of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him. He said Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) was aware of his path to martyrdom and did not go to Karbala in pursuit of power, but to preserve the divine message and establish the principles of justice.

Grand Ayatollah Shirazi also referred to the government of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, peace be upon him, describing it as a model of justice in which no one was killed or imprisoned for political opinion, despite social and intellectual differences.

He criticized later rulers who governed in the name of Islam while practicing killing and imprisonment, and called on followers of the Ahlulbayt (peace be upon them) to present the lives of the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him and his pure family, and Imam Ali, peace be upon him, to the world.

The speech also emphasized the religious importance of reviving the cause of the Ahlulbayt, peace be upon them, through gatherings, mourning ceremonies and educational platforms. Such commemorations were described as a rooted religious duty, not merely a social custom, and as a means of preserving identity, faith and resistance to injustice.

Grand Ayatollah Shirazi urged preachers to show patience, forgiveness and perseverance in their mission, and called for this year’s Arbaeen pilgrimage to be stronger and more widely attended than previous years.

His Eminence concluded by urging believers to intensify their service to Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, and to use Muharram and Arbaeen to promote Husseini values, religious awareness and the enduring message of Karbala.
