Rights Monitor Reports Killing of 39 Civilians in Syria Over Three Days

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on Tuesday that 39 civilians were killed across various parts of Syria over the past 72 hours, underscoring a sharp escalation in violence and a worsening security and humanitarian situation in the country.

According to the Observatory, civilian deaths resulted from multiple causes, including shelling, direct military attacks, clashes between rival forces, and explosions of war remnants. It also cited a troubling rise in summary executions, sectarian-motivated killings, and retaliatory acts in several areas.

The monitoring group said that on January 9, at least 20 civilians were killed in Aleppo due to government shelling, alongside several cases of sectarian killings and field executions. Additional deaths were reported in the following days, including executions and fatalities caused by unexploded ordnance.

The Observatory warned that the high number of casualties in such a short period signals a dangerous trend that could further undermine Syria’s social fabric. It urged the international community and United Nations bodies to intervene, protect civilians, and press for accountability through independent and transparent investigations.
