A fire at the Werdha Damai retirement home in Manado, Indonesia, killed 16 people, authorities said, Reuters reported. The blaze, which broke out on Sunday, was extinguished late that evening, and officials are investigating the cause, according to local police officials.

Footage showed flames engulfing the building as residents tried to help elderly occupants escape. Manado fire chief Jimmy Rotinsulu said most residents were trapped inside, with three others suffering burn injuries. Emergency teams responded quickly, but the fire claimed multiple lives before it could be fully contained.
