Jamia Millia Islamia Students Detained as Protest for Elected Union Continues

Several students were detained outside Jamia Millia Islamia University on Monday as police deployment around the campus intensified. Protesters alleged that students carrying valid identity cards were denied entry and taken into custody, while police pushed back demonstrators gathered outside the campus.

The protest, including a hunger strike that has lasted 15 days, demands the restoration of an elected Students’ Union. Students rejected a recent university notification as inadequate, calling for approval of the union constitution by 20 December 2026 and an election date within 15 days of its approval.

Protesters also demanded the withdrawal of disciplinary actions linked to the demonstrations and the resignation of the Chief Security Advisor. They said a notice from the Chief Proctor’s office threatened legal and disciplinary action if they did not leave the protest site. Students further alleged disruptions to electricity and water supplies on campus.

Despite the detentions and warnings, students vowed to continue their hunger strike and peaceful demonstrations until the university provides a clear, time-bound commitment to restoring elected student representation. They accused the administration of failing to address their demands and called for transparent dialogue.
