Jordanian security forces arrested three suspects on Monday in connection with a deadly attack on St. George’s Church in Karak Governorate, according to state television. The broadcaster reported that the suspects were wounded during a joint security operation carried out by specialized investigation and raid units.

The attack took place on Friday in the village of Hamoud in southern Jordan, where three armed men, later described by authorities as extremists, opened fire on mourners attending a funeral at the church. The assault killed nine people and injured 25 others before the attackers fled the scene.

Jordanian Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya announced on X that the perpetrators had been apprehended, adding that authorities were reviewing the circumstances that led the young men toward extremism.

King Abdullah II condemned the incident as a terrorist attack and vowed that the perpetrators would face the “harshest penalties.” Prime Minister Jaafar Hassan also ordered three days of national mourning across the kingdom.

Christians account for approximately three percent of Jordan’s population of nearly 11 million and generally practice their faith peacefully in the predominantly Sunni Muslim country.
