Investigation Reveals 140 Suspected Mass Grave Sites in El Fasher, Sudan
…………..
An international investigation has identified at least 140 suspected mass grave sites in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, amid ongoing conflict in Sudan. The findings, reported by the Washington Post, highlight serious humanitarian concerns following the control of the city by Rapid Support Forces (RSF), in a context marked by limited access for international monitors and humanitarian organizations.
The investigation combined survivor testimonies, accounts from relatives of abductees, reports from local activists, and analysis of recent satellite imagery. Evidence suggests that mass graves are widespread rather than isolated incidents. Survivors reported large-scale abductions targeting thousands of civilians, including women and children, with many subjected to physical and psychological abuse. Families unable to pay ransoms for release reportedly faced executions, indicating patterns of organized extortion and targeted killings.
Satellite imagery also shows attempts to alter or conceal suspected sites, suggesting efforts to obstruct potential international investigations. Nathaniel Raymond, director of the Humanitarian Research Lab at Yale University, said his team is preparing a detailed scientific report documenting the sites, which could provide a basis for future legal proceedings. These revelations underscore the severe humanitarian crisis in El Fasher and call for urgent international attention, both to document abuses and ensure accountability for potential war crimes and crimes against humanity.
