UN Warns Sudan Conflict “Spiralling Out of Control” as El Fasher Falls
…………..
The war in Sudan is escalating rapidly, with dire humanitarian consequences, The Guardian reported. UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for an immediate halt to the fighting, urging both sides to negotiate an end to the violence. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), reportedly supported by the United Arab Emirates, captured El Fasher in Darfur last week after an 18-month siege.
Videos have emerged showing civilians being shot, including at the town’s maternity hospital. The two-year civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF has created one of the worst humanitarian crises of the 21st century, with over 150,000 killed and more than 14 million displaced.
Prosecutors at the International Criminal Court are collecting evidence of alleged mass killings, sexual violence, and other crimes in El Fasher. Guterres described the situation as “horrifying,” highlighting hunger, disease, and displacement affecting hundreds of thousands of civilians trapped by the ongoing siege.
El Fasher’s fall gives the RSF control of all five Darfur state capitals, raising fears of potential regional partition. The Sudanese ambassador to the UK, Babikir Elamin, emphasized that halting massacres in El Fasher is a priority over a ceasefire and called for the RSF to be designated a terrorist organization.
The US is promoting a peace plan, agreed with Egypt, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia, proposing a three-month humanitarian pause followed by a ceasefire and a nine-month transition to civilian rule. SAF officials have shown resistance, insisting that RSF forces withdraw from urban areas. Meanwhile, RSF attacks continue amid ongoing international pressure for a resolution.
