Eighteen migrants died and over 90 others were rescued after a boat sank near Libya’s Sorman coast, officials said, as reported by Khaama Press. The International Organization for Migration confirmed the recovery of the bodies, while local authorities and the Libyan Red Crescent continued search-and-rescue operations into early Tuesday.

The incident occurred west of Tripoli, highlighting the ongoing dangers faced by migrants attempting the perilous sea crossing from North Africa to Europe. Many travelers rely on smugglers and overcrowded, unsafe vessels. Deadly shipwrecks are common in Libyan waters. Earlier this month, at least 61 bodies were recovered along the coast between Zuwara and Ras Jedir near the Tunisian border.

Humanitarian groups warn that without expanded rescue capacity and safer migration routes, migrant deaths in the Mediterranean are likely to continue. Most migrants departing Libya aim to reach Italy, Malta, or Greece, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced humanitarian measures to prevent further loss of life.
