Sri Lanka Lifts Restrictions on Muslim Nurses Wearing Hijab
…………….

Sri Lanka’s government has confirmed that Muslim nurses are free to wear the hijab and modest attire while performing their duties in public hospitals, ending years of informal restrictions. The announcement was made by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Employment, and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, who stated that no legal barriers exist to prevent Muslim women from observing their religious dress at work.

Herath emphasized that Sri Lankan law guarantees all citizens the freedom to practice their religion, provided it does not conflict with workplace requirements. She also affirmed that wearing the hijab does not interfere with medical duties or safety standards.

The decision has been welcomed by Islamic organizations and human rights groups, who described it as a step toward greater equality and inclusivity in the workplace. Analysts say the move signals a positive shift in Sri Lanka’s approach to religious freedoms following years of debate over Muslim women’s dress in public institutions.
