Syrian Relatives Search Ruined Cemetery for Loved Ones After Assad Regime Attack
———————————–
Relatives in Syria are desperately searching for any sign of their loved ones in a cemetery near Damascus that was deliberately destroyed by the former Bashar al-Assad regime, according to reporting by Anadolu Agency (AA).
The al-Dhaher cemetery, located in the eastern region near Damascus, was deliberately targeted and left in ruins. Family members report that the regime’s forces destroyed the graves, using heavy machinery to remove and scatter the remains, eliminating identifiable burial sites.
One resident, whose brother was buried there after dying under torture in a regime prison, recounted the emotional distress of finding the cemetery entirely destroyed. He stated that the families have been visiting the ravaged site, searching for any identifiable remains or fragments of clothing to confirm the fate of those buried there.
The systematic destruction of the cemetery is viewed by many as another attempt by the Assad regime to erase the evidence and memories associated with the thousands of people killed and forcibly disappeared during the conflict. The deliberate desecration of graves further complicates the process for families seeking closure or forensic evidence regarding the regime’s widespread human rights abuses.
