Conflict Sends 300,000 Fleeing South Sudan in 2025: UN Warning

Approximately 300,000 people have fled South Sudan so far in 2025 as armed conflict between rival leaders threatens a return to civil war, the United Nations warned on Monday, according to Al Jazeera.

The mass displacement was reported by the UN Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan, which cautioned that the escalating conflict between President Salva Kiir and suspended First Vice President Riek Machar risks a slide back into full-scale war.

The renewed clashes have driven almost 150,000 people into neighboring Sudan—itself ravaged by a two-year civil war—and a similar number into Uganda, Ethiopia, and Kenya. The UN report called for urgent regional intervention to avert a catastrophic humanitarian event.

The commission linked the current crisis directly to political instability, systemic corruption, and a lack of accountability among the country’s leadership, who are accused of prioritizing personal interests over the welfare of the South Sudanese people.
