Iraq and Iran Exchange Remains of Soldiers Killed in 1980s War

Iraq and Iran exchanged the remains of soldiers killed during the 1980s war between the two countries in a ceremony held Sunday at the Shalamcheh border crossing in Basra province. A government source said Iraq received the remains of 70 Iraqi soldiers, most of them unidentified, while handing over 48 sets of Iranian remains.

The exchange is part of ongoing efforts by both nations to locate and identify those missing from the eight-year conflict, which claimed around one million lives and caused an estimated $400 billion in damages. Despite the war’s end in 1988 under UN Resolution 598, thousands remain unaccounted for. Authorities from both sides continue to conduct periodic exchanges as part of humanitarian efforts to help families find closure after decades of uncertainty.
