Paris Grand Mosque Condemns Anti-Muslim Remarks on French TV
………….
The Grand Mosque of Paris has strongly condemned remarks aired on France Info, describing them as “shameful” and “extremely serious.” In a statement signed by its rector, Chems-eddine Hafiz, the mosque said the comments represented an Islamophobic narrative that threatens social cohesion in France. The case has been referred to France’s broadcasting regulator, Arcom, for further action.
The controversy arose after journalist Virginie Le Guay claimed Muslims in France posed a “demographic threat” and were “inherently antisemitic.” The mosque argued such rhetoric reflects the “Great Replacement” conspiracy theory, which promotes the idea that Muslim populations will replace others. It stressed that portraying Muslims as a demographic danger or as naturally antisemitic constitutes unacceptable discrimination.
The remarks drew wider outrage, particularly given that France Info is publicly funded. The mosque reiterated its rejection of attempts to import the Israeli-Palestinian conflict into France and emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence. It also cited a recent IFOP survey showing that half of Muslims in France, including non-practicing individuals, have experienced discrimination.
This is not the first intervention by the mosque, which recently filed a complaint against a BFMTV commentator for linking Arabic to “Muslim language,” calling it a direct form of Islamophobia.
