UN Warns of Escalating Hunger Crisis in Yemen

The United Nations has sounded the alarm over a worsening food security crisis in Yemen, warning that nearly 18 million people are at risk of severe hunger, the country’s worst level since 2022. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), families in 166 districts are sliding into emergency conditions, with one in three households going a full day without food.

The report highlights that seven in ten displaced families cannot meet basic food needs, while more than 41,000 people face the risk of famine if large-scale aid is not delivered urgently. Prolonged conflict, economic collapse, climate shocks, rising food prices, and crumbling services have eroded household purchasing power, disproportionately affecting women and girls.

The UN said farmers and herders are losing livelihoods, while families resort to selling assets or cutting medical and essential expenses. With only 10% of this year’s funding requirements met, the UN appealed for immediate international support and launched a $241 million emergency plan, alongside a $20 million allocation from the Yemen Humanitarian Fund.
