UNESCO: Women Make Up Two-Thirds of Global Illiterate Population Despite Literacy Gains

UNESCO has reported that approximately 739 million adults worldwide remain illiterate, with women representing nearly two-thirds of this number. Despite global literacy rates rising to over 86%, up from 68% in 1979, significant challenges persist—particularly among women and children.

The agency also highlighted that around 250 million children globally are struggling to acquire basic reading and writing skills, revealing persistent gaps in education systems across many regions.

UNESCO emphasized that nearly 14% of the global population still lacks literacy skills, calling it a serious issue requiring coordinated international action.

The statement was released in conjunction with International Literacy Day, observed annually on September 8. This year’s theme, “Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era,” underscores the importance of leveraging technology to address literacy challenges and adapt to the changing educational landscape.
