Trial Begins Against Meta Over Alleged Harmful Effects of Instagram on Teenagers

A trial has begun in Tennessee, United States, involving Meta, the parent company of Instagram, over allegations that the platform was designed to encourage addictive use among teenagers and contributed to worsening mental health concerns among young users.

The lawsuit, filed by the Tennessee Attorney General’s Office, accuses Meta of violating consumer protection laws by developing features that encourage prolonged engagement, failing to adequately disclose internal research on potential risks to minors, and introducing new features without sufficient warnings about their possible effects.

State authorities claim Meta’s leadership was aware of concerns surrounding Instagram’s impact on teenagers but did not take adequate steps to address them. The lawsuit seeks financial penalties and changes to platform features, including autoplay content, notifications, short-form videos and other tools that may encourage continuous usage.

Meta has rejected the allegations, stating that it has introduced age-appropriate protections, default safety settings for teenagers and parental supervision tools. The company also argued that users remain responsible for the content they share and cited legal protections for online platforms under US law.

The trial is expected to continue for several weeks as Meta faces similar lawsuits from other US states, along with a separate federal case examining child safety concerns and the impact of social media platforms on adolescent mental health.
