The humanitarian crisis facing the Rohingya Muslim community continues to worsen as more refugees lose their lives while attempting dangerous sea crossings from overcrowded camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, driven by deteriorating living conditions and hopes of reaching Malaysia and Indonesia.

Reports indicate that hundreds of refugees have died or gone missing in the Andaman Sea over the past two years, as human trafficking networks continue to exploit their vulnerable situation by arranging journeys on unsafe boats in exchange for large sums of money.

More than one million Rohingya refugees are living in densely populated camps in Bangladesh, where they face restrictions on movement and employment, worsening humanitarian conditions and increasing violence inside the camps. These challenges have pushed many to risk their lives in search of safer conditions abroad.

According to United Nations data, thousands of Rohingya have attempted to leave the camps by sea in recent years, with these routes recording some of the highest fatality rates due to boat accidents and dangerous maritime conditions.

The Rohingya exodus began following a military crackdown in Myanmar’s Rakhine State in 2017, which forced hundreds of thousands to flee to Bangladesh. The United Nations describes the Rohingya as one of the world’s most persecuted minorities, while international calls continue for lasting solutions that ensure their protection and a safe, dignified return to their homeland.
