Shiite religious leaders have called on Taliban authorities to urgently tackle severe water shortages and the growing challenges faced by forcibly returned refugees in western Kabul.

During a meeting with Kabul Deputy Governor Qudratullah Amini, the clerics highlighted the dire conditions of tens of thousands of families expelled from Iran and Pakistan. They particularly emphasized the critical water crisis in the Dasht-e-Barchi area, home to a large Hazara population.

According to a statement from the governor’s office, the discussions also covered religious, social, and security concerns. Experts have previously warned that Kabul may face an unprecedented water crisis within five years. In response, Amini pledged that the government would work to resolve the water and refugee issues in upcoming phases.
