Surge in ISIS Attacks Deepens Security Crisis in Lake Chad Region
—————————————
A sharp escalation of violence by the extremist group ISIS–West Africa has shaken the already fragile security landscape around Lake Chad, leaving joint Nigerian and Chadian forces reeling under heavy losses, Shia Waves Persian reported.

The source notes that militants have intensified their operations in recent months, employing sophisticated tactics, coordinated field maneuvers, and modern weaponry. These developments highlight the growing vulnerabilities of the multinational coalition tasked with combating insurgent groups in the region.

Local and security sources revealed that in the first half of 2025 alone, ISIS claimed responsibility for more than 230 deadly attacks, a figure that underscores the group’s expanding influence. Meanwhile, the once-dominant Boko Haram faction has receded into the background, with its role in the conflict diminishing significantly.

The escalation has been compounded by political divisions within the coalition and the withdrawal of certain member forces, undermining the effectiveness of counter-terrorism efforts. Analysts warn that these fractures not only embolden ISIS but also deepen uncertainty for millions of civilians already living under the constant threat of violence.

The Lake Chad basin—spanning Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon—has for more than a decade been the epicenter of brutal insurgencies, displacing millions and creating one of Africa’s most severe humanitarian crises. The renewed surge in attacks by ISIS raises fresh concerns about the ability of regional governments and international partners to contain the violence and restore stability.
